Don’t wait until the last minute!

For many Carriers, December is more than celebrating the Holidays. It’s also the time to renew registrations for their trucks. Renewing registrations is not a particularly difficult process. More expensive than painful, unless you wait until the last minute! Waiting until the last minute will insure that a good dose of pain goes along with writing that check. Here is what can happen:
First, a long wait at the state registration counter standing in line with everyone else waiting until the last minute. When you finally get to the counter, you are expected to have filled out your forms completely, using accurate distance records that match the distance records you used to report your Fuel Taxes. If not, back to the end of the line to get your records and fill out your forms.
When at the counter again, along with your completed forms, you will be asked for a copy of your stamped IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax for 2012/2013. If you have it, proceed! If not, you will have to get it processed through the IRS before your new registrations are issued.
It just so happens the IRS shuts down their online e-file process every year the day after Christmas for two weeks, meaning there is no online method to have your HVUT processed. It now takes a trip to the local IRS office, waiting your turn with all the others who need to have HVUTs processed as well as all those who haven’t paid income taxes since 1997! With that done, it’s back to the registration line!
Avoid the pain! Don’t wait until the last minute! If we can help, give us a call at 503-607-1088.
