Will Using an EOBR Eliminate the Need to Audit Driver Logs?
The short answer is no. An EOBR is an electronic on-board recorder, used to track the amount of time a commercial vehicle is driven. Using an EOBR will eliminate form and manner violations with a traditional log book audit, but other violations can still occur. The Department of Transportation (DOT) still requires EOBR — or elog — audits. While the audit method changes, a similar amount of time is required auditing and following up with the drivers on violations found with the EOBR.
To date, companies using EOBRs are seeing fewer Driver Log enforcement violations. This reduction is not necessarily because there are fewer violations; it is mainly due to lack of enforcement training on how to read electronic logs. Once enforcement agencies have the tools and training to review elogs, violations will more than likely increase.
While using an EOBR may increase efficiency and improve record-keeping in some instances, it won’t eliminate the auditing process.
